What is gum disease (periodontitis)?
Gum disease destroys the gums and bone around your teeth. Gum tissues become inflamed, debond from teeth, form pockets, lose bone and in later stages, results in losing teeth.
What happens if I don’t have gum treatment?
The end result of gum disease is mobile teeth with spaces between them. In most cases, avoiding treatment will result in loss of teeth.
What if I smoke or vape?
Smokers and vapers with gum disease don’t always get bleeding gums like everyone else. Nicotine and other additives in cigarettes and vapes restrict gum bleeding while accelerating the rate of damage.
Why do I need to see a periodontist?
In most cases, gum disease can be treated by visiting your dentist or hygienist for cleaning. They will refer you to a periodontist if the severity of your gum disease is outside their scope of practice.
Will I need ongoing care?
